Arizona Politicians Push to Make Bitcoin a Legally Recognized Currency

Arizona State Senator Wendy Rogers has presented a number of bills related to cryptocurrency, one of which would make Bitcoin a legal form of payment in her state.

“I released my crypto bills today,” Rogers tweeted on Tuesday. The bills are co-sponsored by fellow state senate Republicans Jeff Weninger and JD Mesnard.

One of the bills seeks to make Bitcoin a legally accepted form of payment. The legislation defines cryptocurrency as “a peer-to-peer decentralized digital currency in which a record of transactions is maintained on the Bitcoin blockchain and new units of currency are generated through computational solution of mathematical problems and which operates independently of a central financial institution.”

Another bill proposes to allow state-owned entities to enter into “an agreement with a cryptocurrency issuer to provide a method for accepting cryptocurrency as a method of payment for fines, civil or other penalties, rents, fees, taxes, charges, revenue, debts, and special assessments due to that agency or to this state.”

Making Bitcoin a legally accepted form of payment in Arizona has been a gradual process that has taken place over the course of the last year. Rogers tweeted last April:

Centralized digital money is a form of slavery controlled by central bankers. Decentralized Bitcoin is freedom.

El Salvador adopted Bitcoin as its official currency last June, making it the first country to do so. The nation was then led by a pro-Bitcoin president, Nayib Bukele, who purchased hundreds of BTC for the country’s treasury. Bukele announced last November that El Salvadorans could purchase Bitcoin daily.
