Coinbase Wallet Unveils Instant Messaging Feature

Published:

Coinbase has recently announced a new feature for its Coinbase Wallet users, allowing them to send messages across two Ethereum addresses. The messaging capability will be powered by Extensible Message Transport Protocol (XMTP) and will provide users with encrypted, private and portable wallet-to-wallet communication.

The all-in-one messaging and payments feature also includes gas-free USDC transfers on Polygon. Users will only need to start a chat to send any of the crypto assets Coinbase Wallet supports.

Coinbase Director of Product Management, Sid Coelho-Prabhu, stated that the wallet-to-wallet messaging will be fully encrypted, private and portable. The feature is being rolled out to a small subset of users first, including those of Web3 social platform Lens protocol.

To get started, users will need access to the Coinbase Wallet mobile app. They should also have a .lens account or an invitation sent via QR code. If users have used other XMTP apps, like Orb and Lenster, they will find all their chats in their Coinbase Wallet inbox.
