The Essex County OPP is warning citizens to be aware of an online crypto currency trading con that has cost a Tecumseh resident over $70,000.

The police have informed the public that the unfortunate victim will not be able to get their money back. The investigation has been taken over by the Essex County Crime Unit.

“In addition to watching your bank account and credit cards, the OPP advises the public to be on the lookout for any warning signs, and never give out personal information to unknown parties,” said a press release from the OPP.

The OPP has issued several tips to help the public avoid being taken in by these types of scams:

  • Always check a contact’s credentials and be sure that the name on the screen is authentic.
  • Take the time to do your research.
  • If someone calls pretending to be a bank representative, hang up and call the local branch to confirm.
  • Look into ways to protect yourself from fraud and scams.

The “Little Black Book of Scams” can be found online for more information.

The OPP suggests that if you become the target of a fraud or scam, contact the Canada Anti-Fraud Centre by calling 1-888-495-8501 or visiting http://www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
