‘Crypto King’ Sam Bankman-Fried Gets BBC Spotlight in ‘Downfall’ Show

Published:

Just days before the US trial of Sam Bankman-Fried, the former CEO of the now-collapsed crypto exchange FTX, British broadcaster BBC is set to air an investigative piece on the disgraced “crypto king”. Titled “Downfall of the Crypto King”, the documentary will run on BBC’s Panorama for 11 months.

Sam Bankman-Fried, fondly known as SBF, was the face of crypto in Washington as he sought to make FTX the biggest crypto exchange in the world. But in October 2022, his $40 billion crypto empire collapsed, leaving a million customers with billions in losses.

BBC’s show will take a look at what happened leading up to FTX’s bankruptcy. The red flags that preceded the collapse, as well as how Bankman-Fried charmed his way into the hearts of politicians and regulators, will be explored. The documentary will also cover the recent lawsuit filed by FTX against Bankman-Fried’s parents over millions of dollars allegedly gifted to them.

This “mop-haired, nerdy maths genius” once set out to transform the world of crypto, but his journey ended up being one of the biggest losses in the industry’s history. BBC’s Panorama will air on BBC One on September 25 at 20:00.
