  • A survey conducted by eToro reported that female ownership of cryptocurrency assets has grown rapidly, making it the second most popular asset class.

A survey conducted by eToro has revealed that female ownership of financial assets has increased, with cryptocurrency becoming the second most popular asset class.

According to the trading platform’s Retail Investor Beat survey, 34% of women owned cryptocurrencies in the fourth quarter of 2022, a rise of 29% from the previous quarter. By comparison, the ownership rate for men increased just one percentage point, from 42% to 43%.

Ben Laidler, eToro’s global strategist for market analysis, believes that cryptocurrencies have been successful in “bringing more women to the table” where traditional financial markets have sometimes failed.

The survey found that even during the crypto winter, when the prices of bitcoin and other digital currencies plummeted, women increased their digital asset holdings. Bitcoin’s overall market capitalization fell to $3 trillion last year after a valuation drop of more than 60% November 2021 to $1 trillion or less.

The increase in crypto ownership by retail investors was also attributed to women. According to eToro’s data, 39% owned cryptocurrency in the third quarter of 2022 – up from 36% in Q3.

“It’s important to emphasize that retail investors are overwhelmingly long-term, with 63% holding investments for years or decades and just 4% holding them for days,” Laidler said. “Time is on your side in most cases, and for many, brutal technology valuation and resetting of expectations may lead to better returns going forward.”

eToro reported that 10,000 retail investors were surveyed in 13 countries between 2005 and 2008. December 14 and 24.
