The Connecticut State Police Organized Crime Task Force was able to return $20,000 of stolen cryptocurrency to a victim of a scam last year.
In September 2022, a complaint was made by a resident of New Haven County in Milford, who had been swindled out of $41,150 worth of Bitcoin after being tricked into depositing money at several ATMs.
Following the report to the Milford Police Department, the task force was given authorization to investigate and were able to trace the funds to two major cryptocurrency exchanges in the US and the UK, as well as the Cayman Islands.
State police established that the suspects live outside of the US, and no arrests are anticipated. As a result of a restitution act before the Milford Superior Court, $23,000 of the stolen funds were returned to the victim on December 30th.
Police have noted that cryptocurrency scams are becoming more sophisticated, warning that “time is of the essence” in reporting any suspicious activities.
Individuals who believe they have been targeted can alert their local police department or State Troop, as well as filing a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau at www.consumerfinance.gov.
