Entrepreneur Elon Musk is reportedly in the process of launching a business venture that will go up against Openai, the developer of the Chatgpt AI assistant, as per anonymous sources. The internet celebrity is already recruiting a team of engineers and talking to investors.
Elon Musk Allegedly Setting Up AI Company to Rival Openai, Registers X.AI Corp
Elon Musk is allegedly planning to create a business to rival Openai, the creator of the Chatgpt artificial intelligence (AI) assistant, the Financial Times reported on Friday, citing knowledgeable people.
The publication says that the billionaire entrepreneur is currently assembling a group of AI developers while holding conversations with some investors in Spacex and Tesla, two of his most well-known companies apart from Twitter, about backing the new venture, according to Reuters.
Organizations like Microsoft-funded Openai and Google’s parent, Alphabet, have been striving to integrate AI into their offerings despite calls from regulators to put in place comprehensive rules for the technology before its widely adopted.
The news of Musk’s alleged endeavor comes weeks after a group of AI researchers and executives, including himself, called for a six-month halt in developing systems more powerful than Openai’s recent GPT-4 model, warning of potential risks to society.
The entrepreneur was one of the founders of Openai, set up as a non-profit in 2015, and served as its co-chair at first. The investor exited its board in 2018. In March 2023, he registered a corporation called X.AI Corp in Nevada, although it’s unclear if the company is linked to the reported activities.
The Financial Times also wrote that the business magnate has secured thousands of graphics processing units (GPUs) from chip maker Nvidia. The hardware is necessary to power AI applications. Last month, Nvidia’s chief technology officer was reported as saying that artificial intelligence is more useful than cryptocurrency mining.
