Interpol Investigating How to Maintain Order in the Metaverse – Metaverse Bitcoin News

Published:

The International Criminal Police Organization, Interpol, is currently trying to work out how they can govern the metaverse, a digital world that functions as an alternative reality to the real one. Interpol Secretary General Jurgen Stock believes it is essential to be prepared for this process in order to not be left behind by the metaverse and its associated knowledge.

Interpol Prepares to Police the Metaverse

It is difficult for law enforcement agencies to develop certain policies that will enforce the law in the metaverse. Nevertheless, Jurgen Stock, Secretary General of the International Criminal Police Organization, Interpol, feels that the organisation must be ready to act against digital crimes.

The group is getting ready to move into the metaverse. Some teams are already taking advantage of them to commit crimes. In an interview with BBC Stock acknowledged:

Criminals are very innovative {and adept} at adapting quickly to any new technological tools that become available to commit crimes. We have to be able to respond appropriately to that. Sometimes our legislators, society and police are a bit behind.

Some of these crimes currently occurring in the metaverse include verbal abuse and assault, as well as ransomware. Yet, some of these remain grey areas.

The Metaverse is Full of Crimes

One of the major challenges the organisation is facing is trying to determine if an action in the metaverse is unlawful. Dr. Madan Oberoi, Interpol’s Director of Innovation and Technology, admitted that there are still issues in this area.

If you look at the definitions for offenses in physical realms and try to apply them to the metaverse, you will find a problem. We don’t know if they will be considered illegal, but these risks are there and these questions are yet to be answered.

One thing is certain for Oberoi: the metaverse must be policed. Interpol must have contact with the metaverse and be up-to-date on their activities. That’s why the organisation already has its own space in the metaverse. It was launched during its 90th General Assembly in New Delhi in October.

Interpol’s Metaverse platform also serves another purpose. It can also offer online courses for police officers from other countries. This enables them to employ the metaverse’s capabilities immediately.
