Indira Kempis Martínez, a Mexican senator from the Citizens’ Movement and a vocal advocate for the crypto and blockchain industry, is pushing a bill that would make Bitcoin a legal tender in Mexico. Although initially facing little opposition, the bill is now receiving both positive and negative attention.
Kempis said that the bill received more interest after a Bitcoin ATM was installed inside the Mexican Senate. She believes a heat map showing the stance of legislators on the bill would be beneficial.
The bill initially proposed creating a central bank digital currency, but it was later modified to include Bitcoin. Kempis said this was necessary to open a discussion and to get the ball rolling on establishing a legal framework for the country to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender.
The process is being hindered, however, by the silence of the current Banco de México Governor on the topic. The Mexican Senate has asked the bank to deliver an analysis and stance on the bill, but it has yet to do so.
Kempis believes that Mexico could have its digital peso by 2024. She also highlighted the role of the legislative branch in providing education and fostering discussion, pointing out that if El Salvador can do it, Mexico can too.
