American authorities have found evidence of a criminal connection to a drug trade. North Korean hackers have allegedly stolen over $100 million in cryptocurrency. On Tuesday, the FBI announced that the two notorious criminal cases are linked. Lazarus Group APT38 and the Horizon Bridge Network, believed to be a channel for various cryptocurrencies.
Moreover, according to the FBI, Railgun was used to transfer approximately $60 million worth of digital currency. This tracing technology was built by Infinity Axis, a gaming firm, as a way to track crypto transactions.
CALL FOR REGULATION IN STABLECOIN MARKET
This is the first incident of North Korean cybertheft of digital currency that the US government has responded to by taking a pledge to “identify and prevent” any crypto-related money laundering or weapon of mass destruction activities.
Lazarus Group APT38 and APT38 are also believed to be responsible for the Ronin Blockchain theft of over $638 million worth of digital coins. They are also said to be behind the 2014 Sony Pictures ransomware attack which targeted over 200 computers in 150 countries.
WASHINGTON POST ANALYZES THIS MATTER
The FBI has classified the group as a “state-backed hacking group,” and it appears that the agency is taking a strong stance on the issue of North Korea and its illicit cyber activities. It remains to be seen how the FBI will handle any future cases involving the country.
