Police Alert Citizens about Cryptocurrency Rip-off

Saint John police have recently issued a warning to the public about a fraudulent cryptocurrency scam.

On March 9, police reported that a person was contacted by someone who claimed to be employed by a local business. The caller stated that the customer had an outstanding balance and service would be terminated unless payment was made right away.

The customer was provided a toll-free number and instructed to go to a “payment centre” which law enforcement surmised was a local cryptocurrency machine. Additionally, a QR code with the logo of the company was supplied to the individual and told to scan at the payment centre.

The customer then phoned the actual number of the business and determined it was a scam.

Police advised that any requests for payment through cryptocurrency should be viewed as questionable. It is urged that members of the public do not divulge personal or financial info over any inbound or unsolicited phone calls. It is encouraged to contact the company at their reliable number to verify the demand.
