Vueling, a Spanish airline, has revealed plans to allow passengers to purchase tickets with cryptocurrencies and Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) via blockchain technology. The budget carrier has enlisted the help of Criptan, a registered Spanish exchange, with the aim of rolling out the service by the third quarter of 2023.
Vueling to Receive Crypto Payments
Vueling, one of Spain’s leading low-cost airlines, has announced its intention to accept cryptocurrency and NFT payments for tickets. The company lifted travel restrictions to 19 countries due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and is now investigating the use of blockchain and NFTs to facilitate crypto payments. On January 14, the company declared that it had teamed up with Criptan, a Spanish crypto exchange, to enable customers to pay for tickets with cryptocurrency.
Working with Criptan, Vueling has already registered with the Spanish banking system, allowing it to process and fulfill orders via crypto. Jesús Monzo, Vueling’s director of alliances and distribution, commented on the development:
This agreement puts us at the forefront of new technologies and innovation, reinforcing our commitment to our customers and offering the best and most advanced tools and solutions on our website.
Jorge Soriano, CEO of Criptan, believes that crypto payments will improve user experience and show customers the potential of such a solution. Vueling’s crypto payment system will be available on its website in the third quarter of 2023.
Other Airlines Adopting Crypto Payments
Other airlines have already begun to use cryptocurrencies and NFTs as part of their services. Argentina-based Flybondi has announced plans to issue NFTs for flight tickets in September 2022, which customers can then sell on secondary markets. Additionally, the company will accept payments in stablecoins such as USDC and Binance Pay as payment processors.
The Venezuelan government has also announced that it will accept various cryptocurrencies to pay for plane tickets since October 2021, including its national token, the petro.
