Square Enix to Utilize Polygon Network in Symbiogenesis, its Upcoming Web3 Experience

Published:

Japanese gaming company Square Enix has declared that it will be utilizing the Polygon anonymous Ethereum sidechain for its upcoming Web3 experience, Symbiogenesis. Naoyuki Tamate, the producer of the game, mentioned high transaction speeds and low transaction fees as the reasons behind this decision in the game design.

Square Enix to Use Polygon for Symbiogenesis Blockchain Operations

Square Enix, a Japanese gaming company, has provided a new platform for the development of Symbiogenesis, its upcoming Web3-based experience, revealed in November. The firm announced it will be utilizing the Polygon blockchain to handle a portion of the game’s blockchain, an EVM compatible sidechain.

The game will feature numerous non-expensive tokens (NFTs) of artwork as part of its story. It revolves around finishing quests and collecting supplies on a land called “The floating continent”. Regarding the use of the Polygon network in the game Symbiogenesis, producer Naoyuki Tamate of Square Enix declared:

To share this unique experience with Web3 followers, we are offering high transaction speeds and low gas fees.

Square Enix had already admitted that the game would require it to be part of the Ethereum blockchain. However, they explained via Twitter that the Polygon blockchain will be used to provide in-game utility, while Ethereum will be used to collect NFT artwork.

Web3 Videogames are Still Relevant

Although some blockchain gaming strategies, such as the play to win model, have experienced a drastic decline due to the current cryptocurrency market turmoil, some companies still believe in the advantages decentralized structures can bring to game experiences.

Atty. VP of Global Gaming and Platform Business Development at Polygon Labs, Urvit Goel, believes Web3 adoption in games will continue to advance, and developers will soon see the benefits of this model. Goel stated:

Our latest collaboration with Square Enix once again proves that Web3 has gained growing traction among the most prominent developers around the world, demonstrating that this innovative stack of technology and the associated advantages have huge potential in gaming.

Although Symbiogenesis will be the first AAA game designed from the ground up with blockchain elements, Square Enix’s first foray into blockchain was as a validator of Oasys, a gaming-oriented Web3 blockchain initiative. In addition, several blockchain-based IP video games are expected to be released in the next year.
