“Streamr Mainnet 1.0 Goes Live, Achieving 2017 Goal of Decentralized Data Broadcasting”

Published:

On March 19th, 2024, in Zug, Switzerland, Streamr announced the launch of the Streamr Network 1.0 mainnet. This marks a significant achievement as it completes the original 2017 roadmap. With the full deployment of the $DATA token incentive layer, the network has become a feature-complete, fully decentralized protocol that is run and operated by its users.

Streamr 1.0 is the culmination of over six years of research and development, three rounds of incentivized testnets, and overcoming a last-minute technical hurdle that caused a launch abort. This milestone signifies the arrival of decentralized data broadcasting.

Some key features of Streamr 1.0 include the activation of the $DATA token incentive layer, unlocking peer-to-peer market forces between Sponsors, Operators, and Delegators. Sponsors can create and fund stream Sponsorships, while staked Operators earn from them. The network has also transitioned to a trackerless architecture, leveraging a globally distributed hash table (DHT) for enhanced efficiency and scalability. Additionally, node operators can now accept delegations and earn a cut from the earnings, and there are other enhancements for node operators such as the removal of node limits per IP and immediate reward claiming from active Sponsorships.

The launch of Streamr 1.0 also opens up new possibilities for use cases, such as Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks (DePIN), decentralized AI, and decentralized video streaming. The network is currently exploring decentralized live video streaming, leveraging its peer-to-peer protocol to eliminate the reliance on centralized distribution points. This allows viewers to directly contribute to the broadcasting network, optimizing efficiency and scalability.

Streamr 1.0 also enhances the capacity for DePINs to transition from centralized data pipelines to a fully decentralized array of contributors. The network’s serverless, secure, and scalable framework is ideal for broadcasting data from and between connected devices, moving DePINs towards a truly distributed architecture. Additionally, the milestone has the potential to transform artificial intelligence by positioning Streamr as a neutral data layer, offering secure data streams for AI development, reliability, and transparency.

These changes and new use cases demonstrate Streamr’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the realm of decentralized technologies.

About Streamr, it is building the real-time data protocol of the decentralized web. This includes a scalable, low-latency, and secure P2P Network for data broadcasting, delivery, and exchange. As part of the vision, Streamr has built The Hub—a dApp that champions open data to help DePin, AI, and Web3 builders decentralize their tech stack with real-time data flows. The Streamr project was started by real-time data veterans with backgrounds in algorithmic trading and finance markets.
