Tim Berners-Lee On Crypto
Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the British computer scientist widely credited with inventing the World Wide Web, discussed his views on cryptocurrencies in an episode of CNBC’s podcast “Beyond the Valley”, released last week.
The tech innovator labeled cryptocurrencies as “dangerous”, going on to compare them to a game. According to him, investing in cryptos is “purely speculative”, and advised against it. He illustrated this point by comparing them to the dot-com bubble, where people invested in web stocks without any real basis.
Investing in certain things, which is purely speculative, is not what I want to spend my time on.
Despite his reservations, Berners-Lee believes that cryptocurrencies could be beneficial in remittances. He said:
You can use it to send money to loved ones.
However, he warned people against holding cryptos for long periods of time, suggesting that people should get rid of them and convert them to USD.
